Chapel Hill Community Arts & Culture is searching for an experienced North Carolina-based artist or artist team to design and install a mural on the exterior of a new parking deck. The structure is located at 900 Willow Drive in the University Place mixed-use development in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Applications are due by Friday, November 17 at 5 p.m.
The concrete exterior surface area available for a paint- or print-based mural is 47’ tall by 150’ wide. The selected artist or team will contract with RRPV 900 Willow Chapel Hill LP to finalize their proposed design and install the mural.
“This parking deck mural is an exciting opportunity to bring some high-impact public art to Chapel Hill through a public/private partnership with Ram Realty,” notes Steve Wright, Public Art Coordinator for the Town of Chapel Hill. “We look forward to an artist starting their creative process this spring and completing the work by August of 2024.”
Artist applications must include four digital photos of previous large-scale mural work, explanations of each piece, and a resume. A full list of application requirements and eligibility guidelines can be found on the Community Arts & Culture website.
The selection team will be comprised of representatives from 900 Willow and the Town of Chapel Hill. A small number of finalists will be contacted to submit proposals based upon the artistic excellence of their work and large-scale, two-dimensional mural experience. Each finalist will receive a $500 proposal stipend. The theme, appearance, and subject matter of the mural design are open to each finalist’s artistic vision.
The selection team will then choose one proposal for realization. The selected artist or team will receive an all-inclusive $30,000 stipend to finalize the design and install the artwork.
