Artistic Bus Ceiling Design, Art + Transit 2026
We’re looking for Triangle-based artists and artist teams to design original two-dimensional (2D) artwork to adorn the ceilings of Chapel Hill Transit buses. Selected artists/teams will each receive a $700 stipend to create a single final design to be printed three times as adhesive vinyl and installed on three bus ceilings by a Town contractor. The installed artwork will be displayed on the buses for at least 12 months. Vector designs are recommended, as the designs will be ~21 feet long.
FINALIST PROPOSAL STIPENDS: Up to 6 finalists will receive $100 each
DESIGN STIPENDS: 3 selected artists will receive $700 each
ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must be 18+, live within 40 miles of Chapel Hill, and submit application materials using the directions below. Selected artists must have the ability to deliver final designs as .AI or .EPS files per required specifications. Artists who have been commissioned for artistic bus ceilings with the Town of Chapel Hill within the past two years are ineligible.
