Calling Triangle Area Artists

We’re looking for a Triangle-based artist or artist team to design and realize artwork for 140 West Plaza in downtown Chapel Hill that celebrates LGBTQ+ Pride and activates the plaza during Chapel Hill’s Small Town Pride month this June. Possible media include sculpture, installation, projection, imagery on the ground plane, or something else entirely. The final artwork must be highly visible, celebratory, and have a safe, maintenance-free lifespan of one month.

Local artists who identify as members of the LGBTQ+ community are strongly encouraged to apply.

If you’re a Triangle-area artist, submit a qualification following the instructions below.
We’ll select up to three finalists to produce proposals and we’ll pay each artist $100 for this work.
The selection team will choose one proposal for realization.

STIPEND: $4,500
(includes design, fabrication, install, and deinstall)

ELIGIBILITY: Artists must be 18+ and live within a 40-mile radius of Chapel Hill

DEADLINE: 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 20

Complete the form below and upload the following materials as one zipped file. Don’t know how to zip a file? Learn more here. File formats other than those requested will not be considered. Please include:
- Four images of previous work
  - Submit 4 examples of your art that are relevant to this project.
  - Each image should be a separate .jpeg file, no larger than 900 pixels (longest dimension) and 600 KB.
  - Include “previous_work” in the file name.
  - Submit an image list as a separate .docx or .pdf file and include the file name, media, and dimensions.
- Art resume
  - No more than 2 pages providing artistic resume and description of relevant projects.
A selection team made up of representatives from the Cultural Arts Commission, Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership, Community Arts & Culture, and the Town’s LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group will review applications. They’ll select three finalists to submit proposals. We’ll pay each finalist $100. The selection team will choose one proposal and artist for the project. Selections are based on the artistic excellence of previous work, project concept, and design.
