Will there be any entertainment at Chapel Hill's July 4th Fireworks?

No. This year’s fireworks are just the sights and sounds of the fireworks. Music, food, and other entertainment will not be made available by the Town or community partners in Southern Village.

What is the program for Chapel Hill’s July 4th Fireworks this year?

Fireworks! That’s it. With limited planning time since the Governor loosened restrictions and some COVID-related safety guidance in place, a limited program will be offered this year. We look forward to getting back to a July 4th program we all know and love next year.

Will Chapel Hill Transit take me to Southern Village for July 4th fireworks?

No, Chapel Hill Transit does not operate Sunday service to Southern Village, and special shuttles will not operate.

Can I hire a charter bus to bring a group to Southern Village?

There will not be adequate space for charter buses to drop people off and pick them up once the fireworks are over.

Can I park nearby and walk in?

There are very few locations nearby and in walking distance. Parking along U.S. Highway 15-501 (on the sides or in the median) is not allowed. Vehicles stopped in those areas may prevent emergency vehicles from getting through the area. There is also not adequate, safe space to walk along 15-501.

How much parking is available?

Between Southern Community Park and Southern Village, there are approximately 1,000 parking spaces.

When can I arrive?

Parking lots at Southern Community Park and in Southern Village Park & Ride Lot will close to the public at 2 p.m. Those lots will be reopened for event parking beginning at 7 p.m.

Can I cookout before the fireworks?

Parking will be permitted beginning at 7 p.m. There will not be adequate space near parking spots for grills, chairs, tables, etc. We are asking everyone to come with time to get settled at the Parks and Recreation ball fields to watch the fireworks and not plan for other festivities.

Is alcohol allowed?

No, alcohol is not allowed on Chapel Hill Parks & Recreation’s ball fields, the best viewing location for this year’s fireworks.

Can I watch the fireworks from Mary Scroggs Elementary School?

School property will be closed for this event. There is no parking or viewing from Mary Scroggs Elementary School, and restrooms will not be accessible. School property is within the “fall-out zone” in which debris from the spent fireworks could fall. That zone is being kept clear of all non-fire-department personnel for safety reasons.

Will water be provided at the event?

Please bring your own water and non-alcoholic beverages. Water will not be provided at Southern Community Park nor around Southern Village.
