ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE: GUY B. PHILLIPS MIDDLE SCHOOL

The Public Arts Commission was a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Arts Learning award to bring nationally recognized sculptor Bryant Holsenbeck to the Phillips Middle School in Chapel Hill during Fall 2003. Holsenbeck served as an artist in residence in the advanced 8th grade sculpture class, which created a temporary work entitled "THINK." It was installed at the Chapel Hill Police Station on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. from December 2003 to May 2004.

The students explored the boundaries of public art, identified themes and site locations for their artwork, and completed fabrication. Ms Holsenbeck stated, "As the lead artist, my role is to educate the students about how to make the work as strong as possible - for each of them and for the community as a whole."
