HARGRAVES MURALS

Five exterior murals, each approximately seven by fourteen feet, are mounted at the entrances to the Hargraves Community Center, the adjoining AD Clark Pool, and the attached Northside Gymnasium Basketball Court. Each panel presents a history of the Center's community and political leaders, its central role in the Northside neighborhood, and its significance as the first social and recreational facility for African-Americans in Chapel Hill. The works formally recognize the individuals and activities of the Center since its inception. The panels, first painted as murals of 18 x 24 inches, were digitally photographed and enlarged; lamination was applied to the works to withstand the extreme weather conditions of the southeast.

Wilson’s work displays a particular sensibility to the traditional values of family, religion, and relationships in the African and African American communities.
